THE 'little' THINGS ARE NECESSARY

THE 'little' THINGS ARE NECESSARY

It's funny how we spend much time and money on big things and neglect the little things, either out of ignorance or sheer carefree attitude.

My mum told the story of a Queen who felt she was too rich and had everything at her beck and call. Of course she could afford everything her household needed but she despised others who were beneath her class, including her subjects.

One fateful day, the King had an occasion where he invited and was to host the Kings and chiefs of some other lands. He instructed his wife to prepare and all he wanted for the occasion was 'Ugba'(African oil bean  so called by the igbos), a rich African dish.

This was no big deal for the Queen. She ordered her servants to get everything ready. The ingredients were not lacking in the palace. Cow skin(kponmo), beef, crayfish, assorted...

It was now time for the final preparation and a tiny detail(potash) used to mix the entire concoction was not available. This was a humiliation.

The almighty Queen became restless as the dignitaries were all seated and ready to be served the delicacy, which was not ready.

And so she set out to go from house to house of the same people she despised in search of the tiny detail which fortunately was found in the house of an aged woman, poor and hungry looking. She became the Queen's saviour.

The Queen was grateful and humbled and from that time became more humane to all people regardless of their class.

The above story may seem like a fairy tale but it goes a long way to portray how much we may despise little things that matter to us, and this translates into various aspects of our lives. We even despise a set of people because we feel we may never need their help in life. Those people may be our potential helpers.

I remember how mum will always tell me that as a lady, I ought not to lack certain things in my bag wherever I went - tissue, needle and thread, safety pins, razor blade and several other tiny details. "You never can tell", she would say.

I know how many times I have been stranded and embarrassed when I did not follow suit.

When was the last time you paid attention to your underwear, toothbrush, fingernails, your ears, etc?

How do you treat those who are 'little people'? Those who are not in your already created high/middle class?
